Came here for a wedding. Spent the weekend in a cabin with one of my friends. We had a blast. Went to the bar down the road the night before the wedding. Had fun there. The wedding was done at the lodge and it was beautiful. Cold because it was outdoors, but they hooked them up with a cover and outdoor heaters. The cabin we stayed in was very clean and had games and cable. We were right off the river, too. You could stand on the back deck and listen to the water run. Pet and kid friendly. Very romantic place for a wedding or weekend away with your partner.
A beautiful destination, room was also lovely and the fireplace was a great touch. We loved the location close to the cascades. Only downside was we visited post peak season so on site dinner wasn’t available, but it was otherwise wonderful and we would definitely stay again
Beautiful building and location just north of Mazama. Our "suite" was really a huge one bedroom apartment with plenty of space to stretch out. It was clean and well maintained. The folks that made our pizzas at the Jack's hut were super nice and the staff that we encountered were great too. Definitely the nicest place to stay in the area!
This would have been our 7th stay with Freestone. It’s a place we’ve loved coming for years, though for the last few it has been noticeable that they are struggling with staffing just as their website now notes.
Yesterday I called about an upcoming stay (14 days from now) and our ability to cancel because my nephew has been in the hospital and yesterday was life flighted to a hospital that specializes in his care. I had called with the same concern a week ago, and was told I still had time to cancel although looking back, I didn’t share that our booking was over NYE, and they didn’t ask. During this part of the conversation, the person I spoke to told me it was a lie that I called because it wasn’t in their notes, and it was a lie that I was told I had more time to consider the reservation. This was bad enough, but it got worse.
I told the person I was speaking to that the details around cancellation left me feeling misguided, both as a result of the phone call I’d had previously, and the email I received. While freestone notes that they celebrate specific holidays, and for those 30-day notice is required, Freestone has no facilities open on NYE including restaurants and so it’s surprising that they consider this a holiday they acknowledge.
The person I spoke to said she did not care about my confusion and said I’d signed their agreement, which is what she did care about. I was still speaking when she ended the call, and what I was saying is that we’d obviously keep the reservation if our only options were no refund or come. We also considered sending friends. I called back twice and she did not answer, however when my husband called from a different number she answered immediately. He clarified our intentions with her but said he also still wished to speak with a manager. She told him the manager would be in today, Monday 12/18.
Last night I received a note that Freestone had cancelled our reservation and was charging us the full stay. My husband called again today and we were told the manager will now not be in until tomorrow.
We likely won’t be back in time for our reservation as my nephew will still be in the hospital, and if that comes to be we’d planned to send friends as a gift. I’ve never been treated this way as a paying customer anywhere, and as we’ve recommended so many friends to freestone over the years it’s painful to write this: don’t stay here. They can’t afford staff or to make up for their own mistakes, and you will be out money or the good vibes you came for if you interact with the person I did.
Mazama Inn, Basecamp, and Sun Mountain Lodge are other places we’ve stayed and are filled with caring and accurate staff.
Started coming to the Freestone a month or two after it first opened in 1996. Our son was with us and was 2 months old. He is now 27. We love this place. It can be a challenge to operate as far off the grid as the Freestone, but this is a special place. I call in a Teddy Roosevelt style lodge out of another era. So peaceful. Some of the most incredible scenery in North America is right up the road at the Washington Pass overlook. Fall foliage in the Methow is something else. On the one hand I’d like to keep the Freestone to myself and my family. On the other hand, I want people to know about it and pay a visit and keep this marvelous place going for future families and travelers.
We visited Mazama from Chicago for a wedding and we were very pleasantly surprised. The views are breathtaking, the cabin we stayed in was roomy and comfortable, and the staff was pleasant. My kids loved swimming and playing in the lake (they liked the pool too, but preferred the lake). It was the perfect setting to kick back and enjoy visiting with family and friends.
We had a cabin and brought our dog. Private, deck, walk in shower, dishwasher, fireplace. Very clean. Beautiful setting. The Inn is very nice but the cabins are fantastic.
So glad we were able to snag a last minute room on our way through the cascades. The room was perfect with a view of the lake and the hot tub was awesome. We must’ve been staying just before the main season since the restaurants weren’t open, but we had the place almost to ourselves so it was worth it. Definitely plan to be back someday!
